The IZZO Swami 1500 golf GPS unit is a really nice, mid to lower priced golf GPS. I don’t know about you, but knowing actual yardages is really helpful, especially on a course you don’t play every weekend. In general, a golf GPS, like the IZZO Swami 1500 golf GPS unit is much better than a laser rangefinder because you don’t have to get a line of sight. Basically, you don’t have to “see” the green from where you are. The satellite GPS system takes care of all of that.

Some golf GPS systems can cost a few hundred dollars, but not the IZZO Swami. Currently it sells well below $100. And, to my mind, that’s money well spent. (If you like golf, which I do.)

It’s powered by the latest GPS technology. In this case, you’re talking about the SIRFStar III chip. The IZZO Swami 1500 can show you the distance to the front, middle, and back of the green from wherever you are. You can use it on virtually any course in the US. I looked up the el cheapo county course where I take my kids to play, and even that was included. When you turn it on, you don’t have to do anything. If you’ve uploaded the course data, it will instantly recognize the course you’re on. (It can hold up to 10 courses.) Uploading is really easy, too. You get a cable, which you connect to your computer, and you upload that way.

The IZZO Swami 1500 golf GPS unit fits into the palm of your hand. There are only four buttons on it, so it’s really easy to use. Not something that would distract you on the course. You just pull it out, take a look at the distances on the easy to read liquid crystal display, then put it back in your pocket on your golf bag and continue playing.

The Garmin Approach G5 GPS-Enabled Golf Handheld is one of my favorite, high-end golf GPS devices. There are several reasons for this. One is I’m a Garmin man when it comes to automotive GPS’s. Garmin makes quality. I think they have the most innovation and best overall engineering going. That’s sort of a general qualification. Let’s look at a few specific reasons why I really like the Garmin Approach G5 GPS-Enabled Golf Handheld.

Garmin Approach G5: Built with Golf in Mind

The " target="_blank">Approach G5 only weighs about 6.8 ounces. I like that because I can’t stand for stuff to be in my pockets when I golf. I always take my keys and wallet and put them in my bag. I like to keep my golf GPS with me, however, because I can readily get to it and check where I am, what the next shot it, etc.

Garmin Approach G5: Display

I love the Approach’s display! It’s easy to read. It takes up most of the “real estate” on the device. So, there’s not much wasted space. As you walk around the golf course, you can watch the display change to keep up with where you are.

Garmin Approach G5: Favorite Golf Courses

My favorite golf courses are included in the courses that normally come with the " target="_blank">Garmin Approach G5 GPS-Enabled Golf Handheld. I live in Atlanta, and both of the courses I play were on the list. One of those courses is a public course. It’s not Augusta! And, I was surprised to see it available. But there it was. Garmin Approach: Focused on the Green

I like the way the Garmin Approach G5 GPS-Enabled Golf Handheld is so focused on getting on the green. I’m not that great of a golfer, and my GPS has improved my game a lot just by making me plan my shots.

So, what’s the best golf GPS you could buy? As part of my expansion of this site into all things GPS, we’re going to start covering the golf GPS market. Just so you know, I’m remarkably opinionated about golf GPS devices. I play golf, and I really love GPS technology. (When I say that I play golf, I’m not saying that I’m any good…just that I play!  ) So, take my suggestions with a grain of salt. But just as I do with the automotive GPS devices I’ve reviewed, I try to keep the technical stuff out and only talk about what matters to you as a consumer, which is what does the device do and how well does it do it.
So, let’s get back to what is (or what are) the best golf GPS devices.
There’s no real way to definitively say that a particular golf GPS device is the absolute best. For one thing, golf GPS’s sell in a range from $50 to over $300, and, as you can imagine, the features in devices at each end of this spectrum are radically different. The lower priced gold GPS devices are not much more than range finders, which is really helpful on an unfamiliar course. The upper end GPS devices are more like having your own artificially intelligent, digital caddy.
One way, however, to try to get a handle on what is the best golf GPS, or what are the best golf GPS devices, is to take a look at what’s selling. Right now, the top three bestsellers on Amazon are the following:

2. Garmin Approach G5
3. GolfLogix Garmin GPS
We’ll take a look at each of these in future posts, but for right now, let me say a few words about each.

Best Golf GPS: Garmin Approach G5
I’m not surprised that the Garmin Approach G5 is one of the best golf GPS devices on the market. It’s been a bestseller for quite some time. Best Golf GPS: GolfLogix Garmin GPS
For a mid-priced golf GPS device, the Garmin Golflogix is surely one of your best bets. Right now, the Golflogix runs less than $200 at Amazon. It gives you distance to hazards and the green, plus plenty of other information. It’s easy to see why the GolfLogix Garmin GPS is one of Amazon’s bestsellers.
